A research design is the blueprint that turns a curiosity into answerable research. It moves from reading existing studies, through concepts and theories, to research questions, objectives and hypotheses, and then to choices about data and method. For example, the vague interest in why students drop out becomes researchable only when dropout is defined, a population is chosen, and a question asks whether family income, school distance, or gendered expectations best explains leaving.
