Indian sociology did not merely import Western theory; it reinterpreted Indian society through its own history, texts and movements. Gandhi linked morality to politics, Ambedkar analysed caste as graded inequality, Mukherjee studied values and social ecology, Ghurye traced caste and tribes, Srinivas explained Sanskritisation and the dominant caste, and Karve brought kinship and gender into focus. For example, when a village adopts upper-caste rituals to gain status, Srinivas would call it Sanskritisation, while Ambedkar would ask whether ritual change alters graded inequality.
