People behave differently in groups: they may work harder before an audience, slack off when effort is hidden, follow a majority against their own judgement, or obey an authority they disagree with. A student who answers correctly alone but agrees with a wrong majority in class is not being irrational in a simple sense. This chapter explains the distinct mechanisms behind facilitation, loafing, conformity, compliance, obedience and reactance.
