Motivation is the process that energises, directs and sustains behaviour towards a goal. It begins with a need or a tempting incentive and ends, for a time, when the goal is reached or abandoned. For example, hunger energises food seeking, directs it towards an available meal, and sustains searching until eating reduces the drive, which is the classic motivational cycle in miniature.
