Signal detection theory separates how sensitive an observer is from how willing they are to say yes. For example, a radiologist may spot faint tumours because of sharp sensitivity, or may simply report more often because of a liberal decision rule. This chapter covers sensitivity, bias, subliminal perception, pattern recognition and cultural and ecological views of perception.
