Behaviour runs in families, but that does not by itself prove it is genetic, since families share environments as well as genes. For example, identical twins raised apart who resemble each other more than fraternal twins do provide stronger evidence for genetic influence than ordinary family resemblance. This chapter covers chromosomal anomalies and the nature-nurture controversy, with twin studies and adoption studies as the key methods for separating genetic from environmental influence.
