A psychological test is a standardised sample of behaviour, scored by fixed rules so that different people can be compared fairly. For example, a vocabulary test does not measure all of a person's language ability; it samples it, and the score is meaningful only because the sampling and scoring rules stay the same. This chapter covers the main types of tests and the steps by which a good test is built, from item writing to item analysis.
