Health psychology asks why people behave in ways that protect or damage their health, and how mind, body and social life interact in illness. For example, a person who knows smoking harms health may still smoke when stressed, because knowledge alone does not change behaviour. This chapter covers health-promoting and health-compromising behaviours, lifestyle and chronic disease, and psychoneuroimmunology.
