The philosophy of the Indian Constitution is stated most compactly in its Preamble: justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. This chapter explains how that philosophy is carried by Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles. For example, the right to equality is read together with directives on welfare, so liberty and social justice are pursued as partners, not rivals.
