Jain, Buddhist and Carvaka ethics offer three sharply different answers to how one should live. Jainism pursues liberation by stopping new karma and shedding old karma, Buddhism by wisdom, morality and meditation expressed as compassion for all beings, and Carvaka by the frank claim that pleasure in this life is the only real good. For example, a Jain monk sweeps the ground before walking to avoid harming tiny beings, while a Carvaka thinker would ask what observable evidence there is for any afterlife at all.
