Western philosophy begins with the Milesians asking what everything is made of, then splits between Parmenides denying change and Heraclitus making it everything. For example, Thales says water, while Democritus says atoms and void — two very different answers to one question. This chapter traces that arc to Socrates, who turned philosophy from nature to the examined life.
