Medieval thinkers tried to hold faith and reason together, asking how an all-good, all-powerful God could coexist with evil and whether God's existence can be proved. For example, Anselm argues that God, defined as the greatest conceivable being, must exist even in reality. This chapter covers Augustine on evil, Anselm's ontological argument and Aquinas on faith, essence and existence.
