Marketing is not selling; it is the whole process of creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and managing relationships so that both the firm and the customer benefit. Selling starts with the firm's product and pushes it; marketing starts with the customer's need and builds the product around it. The marketing mix — product, price, place, promotion (the 4Ps), extended for services with people, process and physical evidence — is the firm's toolkit. Worked example: two phone makers sell similar hardware, but one wins because it understood that buyers wanted camera quality and easy service, then built the product, price, stores and advertising around those two needs — that is marketing, while the other firm's discount-led pushing is merely selling.
