Most strategies fail in implementation, not formulation: the plan was sound, but structure, systems, people and culture never changed to carry it. Implementation means converting strategy into action through organisation structure, resource allocation, policies and procedures, leadership, culture and control systems. Worked example: a firm adopts a differentiation strategy based on service quality but keeps a structure that rewards cost-cutting, a bonus system tied to volume, and no service training — the strategy dies at the first budget meeting because every system still serves the old cost strategy. Implementation is alignment: every system must point the same way as the strategy.
