Research is systematic inquiry aimed at discovering, verifying or extending knowledge, not casual opinion or simple information gathering. In library and information science it asks how users seek information, how collections serve them, and how services can be improved with evidence. A library that studies why its e-resources are underused, rather than guessing, is doing research in the truest sense.
