A research design is the blueprint that links a question to evidence: it states what will be studied, whom it covers, and how data will be gathered and analysed. Good design prevents the most common research failure, which is collecting a great deal of data that cannot answer the question asked. A study of catalogue use that samples only final-year students, for instance, cannot speak for the whole university.
