A digital library is not a folder of files: it is an organised collection with selection, description, access, and preservation. This chapter explains what makes a digital library, how users find material in it, and why digital preservation is a continuing commitment. A thesis that can still be opened, cited, and trusted fifty years from now is the real test of a digital library.
