Management is the work of getting things done through people and resources toward a purpose, and a library is managed, not merely run, when its planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling form one coherent system. Different schools explain the same library differently: one sees efficiency in work methods, another sees motivation in human relations, and a third sees the library as an open system. A circulation desk that is fast but unfriendly shows why efficiency alone is not good management.
