Metadata is the data that lets a system describe, manage and retrieve a resource, and indexing is the process that turns a document into searchable access points. Retrieval succeeds only when the language of the searcher meets the language of the index. A search that returns thousands of irrelevant hits and misses the best article has failed on both precision and recall, not on effort.
