Classification gives every document a place among related documents so that a reader can find it by subject rather than by accident. A good scheme groups like with like, keeps the order helpful on the shelf and in the catalogue, and leaves room for subjects not yet invented. The difference between a ready-made class list and a faceted scheme decides how well a library handles new compound subjects.
