Primary sources give you the original evidence itself, while secondary sources tell you what others made of it. This chapter separates the two groups cleanly, shows where familiar items such as textbooks, reviews and indexes belong, and warns about borderline cases. A research article reporting a new experiment and a review article summarising fifty such experiments belong on opposite sides of this line.
