A tort is a civil wrong that is not a breach of contract and not a crime, and its usual remedy is compensation for the harm suffered. This chapter explains duty, breach, causation and damage, and the defences that can defeat a claim. A worked example shows a shopkeeper who leaves a wet floor unmarked and a customer who slips: duty, breach, causation and loss all line up, so liability follows.
