Three statutes protect people in the market and on the road: consumer law gives buyers remedies for defective goods and deficient services, motor vehicles law allocates responsibility for road accidents, and competition law keeps markets open by banning cartels and abuse of dominance. This chapter shows how each regime works in practice. A worked example follows a buyer of a defective washing machine: repair, replacement and compensation are consumer remedies, not a favour from the seller.
