The Gupta age, from the fourth to sixth centuries CE, is often called a classical age for its achievements in literature, science, art and temple architecture, though historians now stress its regional variation and limits. The Vakatakas ruled the Deccan as Gupta contemporaries and allies, patronising the Ajanta caves. After Gupta decline, Harsha of Kannauj reunited much of northern India in the seventh century, patronised Buddhism and learning at Nalanda, and was recorded by both Banabhatta and the Chinese pilgrim Hiuen Tsang.
