The Indus or Harappan civilisation, flourishing in the third millennium BCE, was one of the world's earliest urban civilisations, known for planned cities, standardised weights and long-distance trade. Mohenjo-daro's Great Bath and its covered drains are concrete proof of civic planning, not merely large buildings. Yet its script remains undeciphered, so much of its political and religious life must be reconstructed cautiously from material remains rather than from texts.
