Cultural Studies treats culture not as high art alone but as the whole way of life — and reads popular songs, advertisements and television with the same seriousness as novels. Example: Raymond Williams's slogan that 'culture is ordinary' turns the old hierarchy upside down: a bus ticket and a poem are both cultural texts, and the critic's job is to read the meanings each carries.
