English in India: history, evolution and futures

English in India began as a colonial instrument and became an Indian language: a history the exam tests through dates, documents and debates. Example: Macaulay's Minute on Indian Education (1835) argued for English education to create a class 'Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste' — and that single phrase is quoted in exam answers more than any other document in this unit.
