Management and administration are often used interchangeably, but they differ: administration sets policy and direction, management executes it and gets work done through people. In a school, the board or government administers (decides aims and rules) while the principal manages (runs the timetable, staff and resources). Worked example: deciding that a school will admit all local children is administration; arranging teachers, rooms and books so that it actually happens is management.
