Is intelligence one thing or many? Early tests gave one IQ score; later theories split it into many abilities. Sternberg says intelligence is analytical, creative and practical. Gardner says there are multiple intelligences — linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalistic. Worked example: a child who struggles with arithmetic but composes music or leads a team is not unintelligent — on Gardner's view, the school is measuring only two of many intelligences.
