India's growth story is one of structural transformation with distinctive features: a long period of modest growth under planning and controls, faster growth after the 1991 reforms opened trade, industry and finance, and a services-led pattern unusual for a developing economy — services expanding strongly while manufacturing's share stayed smaller than in East Asian success stories. Growth has also been uneven across states and between formal and informal employment. Worked example: if GDP grows 6% while population grows 1%, per capita income grows about 5% (6 - 1, approximately), which is the growth households actually feel.
