Research is systematic inquiry aimed at answering a question with evidence. It starts with a problem, reviews what is already known, states a hypothesis, collects data, analyses it, and reports conclusions. Worked example: to study whether training improves sales, a researcher defines sales performance precisely, compares trained and untrained groups, and checks whether the difference is larger than chance could explain — that discipline is what separates research from opinion.
