The business environment is the sum of all forces outside a firm that affect its working: economic, political, legal, socio-cultural and technological conditions. A firm cannot control these forces, but it must read them correctly, because a change in interest rates, a new law or a shift in consumer tastes can change profits overnight. Worked example: when a central bank raises interest rates, borrowing becomes costlier, firms postpone expansion, and demand for big-ticket goods falls — one economic force rippling through the whole environment.
